About The Artwork:

"Fourteen For Now" is a black and white illustration that captures the essence of transformation and introspection through a unique combination of elements. Waves have long been a powerful symbol in various cultures, often representing life's constant motion and unpredictability. In some traditions, waves signify the emotional highs and lows that we experience, while in others, they symbolize the barrier between the conscious and subconscious mind. The turning of waves into leaves in this illustration adds an element of transformation and growth, suggesting a natural evolution from one state to another. Leaves, often associated with renewal and the cyclical nature of life, further emphasize the theme of continuous change.

Whales, majestic and ancient creatures of the deep, have been revered in many cultures for their wisdom and strength. In some Native American traditions, whales are seen as the guardians of memory and knowledge, while in Polynesian culture, they are considered protectors and symbols of unity. The presence of a whale in this illustration, particularly its tail above the water, signifies a connection between the depths of the ocean (the subconscious) and the surface (conscious awareness). It speaks to bringing hidden knowledge and emotions to light, bridging the gap between what lies beneath and what is visible.

The whale skeleton, stark and haunting, serves as a reminder of mortality and the passage of time. In many cultures, skeletons are not merely symbols of death but also the afterlife and the continuation of the soul's journey. The ribs of the whale, ending in candles, introduce an element of sacredness and illumination. Candles, with their gentle, unwavering light, are often associated with guidance, hope, and the human spirit. In various traditions, they are used in rituals to honor the dead, seek protection, or symbolize enlightenment and the presence of the divine.

Combining these symbols, the illustration can be seen as a meditation on life, death, and rebirth cycles. One potential interpretation is that the seated woman represents a figure in contemplation, surrounded by the remnants of a great being, the whale, whose life and wisdom continue to influence the world even in death. The candles on the whale's ribs might signify the persistence of hope and light amidst darkness and decay. Alternatively, the scene might be viewed as a metaphor for the soul's journey, with the woman embodying a seeker of truth and understanding, guided by the light of the past (the whale's legacy) and the promise of new beginnings (the leaves).

"Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don't resist them; that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally forward in whatever way they like." — Lao Tzu
